Gullies at the Edge of Hale Crater, Mars

This image from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter shows gullies near the edge of Hale crater on southern Mars. Martian gullies carved into hill slopes and the walls of impact craters were discovered several years ago. On Earth, gullies usually form through the action of liquid water -- long thought to be absent on the Martian surface. Whether liquid water carves gullies under today's cold and dry conditions on Mars is a major question that planetary scientists are trying to answer.

Gullies at this site are especially interesting because scientists recently discovered actively changing examples at similar locations. Images separated by several years showed changes in the appearance of some of these gullies. Today, planetary scientists are using the HiRISE camera on MRO to examine gullies such as the one in this image for change that might provide a clue about whether liquid water occurs on the surface of Mars. The view covers an area about 1 kilometer, or 0.6 mile, across and was taken on Aug. 3, 2009. Image Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Arizona

WD New My Books with E-ink

My iMac just told me, he wants one of those for X-mas... And I agree with him totally!

Good news for hardcore portable storage buffs: looks like Western Digital is taking a hint from Verbatim and putting an e-ink display on its My Book Elite and My Book Studio portable hard drives, offering the device's label and free space up-front, perfect for those of us juggling multiple portable storage devices. In addition, both offer WD SmartWare, 256-bit hardware-based encryption, and are available in capacities ranging from 500GB to 2TB. My Book Studio (formatted for Mac and sportin' a FireWire 800 interface) ranges from $149.99 to $299.99 depending on size, while My Book Elite (with a USB 2.0 interface and NTFS formatting) will run you anywhere from $169.99 to $279.99.

If what you're looking for however, is the company's "smallest drive to date," check out My Passport Elite. Featuring a USB dock, illuminated capacity gauge, a secure "drive lock" indicator, and that 256-bit hardware-based encryption, this bad boy is sports up to 640GB storage (which will run you $169.99). This one is available in one of three "metallic" colors -- Metallic Red, Metallic Blue, or Charcoal Metallic. Sadly, the company hasn't yet teamed up with MusicSkins for a Metallica skin -- but our fingers are crossed.

Tracking Workout Routines

After a year of break from the gym, I am back to get and stay fit. Yesterday, I completed the first month of my reintegration into the routine based on a new work out program I created. I did not miss any days and I feel already much better about doing everything I plan for month of September. Now it is time to take this routine and start pushing myself harder and harder. I will be tracking my progress on the DailyBurn.com thanks to their free and awesome iPhone App which syncs all data directly from the phone from each work out with the web site and my profile on it. I hope to add some goals and more challenges in coming weeks. DailyBurn.com has a great community, with many people like myself who I can use as the motivators.
